'til after five years

in some ways, that is a long time.  i look back at things i've written and created, instantly seeing my youth of then, and i wonder how Nelly or any artist might feel about their work throughout their ages.  a living timeline of learning, experiencing, and understandings that constantly become old to some, new to others, while grabbing ahold of a few forever.

Nelly's sound captured me with her 3-song demo, and from that moment i was hoping for a long and prolific musical endeavor by her.  Folklore and Loose have continued to intrigue, delight, and sometimes mesmerize me, both uniquely and wonderfully embodying her aura.  while Folklore reminds me of an ancestral, picnic-like gathering, Loose is exquisitely produced from a myriad of relations.  she may be attaining a more visceral approach, but her music is more cohesive and compelling than ever.  it's a great accomplishment to create such a unified driving force behind an album of this breadth, so hats off to her, Timbaland, and all contributors.

what i've been looking forward to the most in writing a new post here is to congratulate Nelly on being a mom.  when inspiration is flung at you in the form of chicken soup at a restaurant, and Miami's heat is shared with brilliant, sun-drenched smiles from your child playing in beach sand, you've really got a great thing going.  and anyone who takes on the persona of a smelly dorito for kicks is sure to be a fun and terrific mom.  congrats Nelly!

the only other updates are in the .com area and banners.  everything these days is easily found with search words, so this site will simply stay as is.  although, now that i'm venturing into photography, perhaps i'll be able to take some exclusive photos of Nelly someday.  we'll see.

in the meantime, here's a Promiscous remix by the good man Hint, and an acoustic version of Try featuring the always explorative Kronos Quartet.

whats this, an update?

yes it is!  along with a few minor adjustments and fixes - i've updated the links, created another banner, selectively added 168 photos, and decided to include Onde Estás in the lyrics section because i love that song.. reminds me of Ne Me Quitte Pas.

for quite a while i considered whether or not to find more pictures.  aside from its daunting task, i liked keeping a quaint little time capsule of a site, and didn't want this place to feel overcrowded or unbalanced with an unnecessary amount of images; yet i decided to go ahead with it by creating something from them - a story.. Nelly's career so far.  not exactly chronological or anything very intricate - just enjoyable.  it's there if ya care to read into it, along with a few surprises.

Happy New Year and thanks to Michele at nelly-furtado.com for the kind words!

the times, they are a-changin'

over two years now since i first heard Nelly. i suppose i cannot imagine the trip this has been for her.. how much different things may be compared to that quiet night in Boston when i first saw her perform at TT The Bears.  that really was an amazing show.   i brought a few friends with me, who had never heard of her of course, and they were quickly taken by the music.. a different music i think than what was played during her burning in the spotlight tour, which seemed a bit more straight forward Pop (or maybe just Loud) but hey - thats what the spotlights all about.

i prefer the more intimate and strongly felt soft settings approach - like this track from November 23, 2000 at the Paradise Garage in Lisboa, Portugal - thou, either way, it certainly has been interesting hearing her voice develop and grow, as she and her voice have become stronger and more confident over this time im sure; being evident in everything she did, as she did very well.

i cant wait to hear what she does for the next album; how she may use her voice, or how she interprets any discoveries she has made along the way...

cheers to you Nelly

ps

Nelly, thanks for the Souls of Mischief and Kinnie Starr tip.

oh yeah

in case it wasnt a given; the Fado version should be in Portuguese and if (preferably) not a direct translation from either French or English, rather a rendition done personally by Nelly towards what she feels - the way McKuen did with Brel's original.  i know this is a lot, but i think Nelly could do it exceptionally well.  along with putting her in a class of beyond respectable artists who have covered each song, this may be a 'mother may i' step further.

take cover

back in the day (is that safe to say?) Nelly was asking people for ideas on songs to cover; i think its even one of the first things she asked me.  i have often recalled this request, sorting through the Too Many songs in my mind, and although there are a great number of songs that might be fun or funny for her to try, only one remained consistently: Ne Me Quitte Pas / If You Go Away

there's so much to this song, it's better to hope you feel from it rather than for me to describe it with justice.  becoming one of my favorites on first listen, this brilliantly deep and in some ways dark song could also grant a challenge covering it; which seems like something Nelly might like.  perhaps in 3 ways: a French version (jazz/blues or orchestrated in the style of French composers
.. namely, Claude Debussy), a redone pop version (sounds like the most work..must be careful hear), and of course a traditional Fado version.  maybe this would make a good cd single..

so what'cha think Nelly, you up for it?

in whatever and all you do, my best wishes and good luck to you.

it's been a while

i apologize for the sudden and lengthily downtime of this Nelly site; the old host site was not a good place to be and i could no longer stand trying to work with people who care so little about music, and only of themselves, to say the least.  their remanence has been removed from this site with donthink.net thankfully taking place of it.

i'm not sure how often i'll be able to update.. Nelly seems to be busier than i'd ever have time to take note of, which is very nice to see.  i'm glad things are going so well for her, and so quickly
.. its amazing.  for now i just wanted to finally get this place up again and say hello... Hello

reviews of Nelly live!

...her show was filled with energy, excitement, soul, and fun. Nelly and her band had everyone in the room from 21 year olds to over 40 year olds on the floor and moving to their eccentric rhythms. her show literally blew my mind...

...i highly recommend that EVERYONE go to a Nelly show! she puts so much feeling into each song. through facial expressions, body movements, and vocal expertise, Nelly lets the audience know that the lyrics aren't just words, but, that they actually have meaning to her...
